The Curriculum

WEEK 1 — South America: Peru & Colombia | June 2–5
Children will explore the vibrant textile traditions of Peru and Colombia through hands-on fiber arts projects. They will create colorful arpilleras (patchwork story tapestries) and molas, a traditional layered textile art known for its bold designs and intricate patterns.

WEEK 2 — Central America: Guatemala | June 8–12
This week introduces basic sewing machine skills while exploring the weaving traditions of Guatemala. Children will learn sewing fundamentals as they create an elastic-waist ribbon skirt inspired by traditional Maya textiles and sew a practical tote bag.

WEEK 3 — Asia: India & Indonesia | June 15–19
Students will discover the rich textile heritage of India and Indonesia through traditional fabric arts. Projects include block printing, batik dyeing techniques, a cashmere-inspired stuffed animal or silk eye mask, and a sewn tablecloth or set of napkins.

WEEK 4 — Africa: West & East Africa | June 29–July 3
A vibrant week celebrating the bold colors, patterns, and craftsmanship of African textiles. Children will create a Kente-inspired cloth, experiment with Adinkra stamping, sew a drawstring pouch, and design a beaded bracelet inspired by traditional Maasai beadwork.

WEEK 5 — Europe: Scotland, Ireland & France | July 6–10
Students will explore some of Europe's best-known textile traditions. Projects include a tartan-inspired rag doll from Scotland, an Irish linen apron featuring Celtic knotwork designs, and a fragrant lavender sachet bag with ribbon trim inspired by France.

WEEK 6 — Native American Textile Traditions | July 13–17
Children will learn about the diverse textile and beadwork traditions of Native American cultures. Projects include a medicine bag, a beaded cuff bracelet inspired by Wampum designs, a Seminole patchwork quilt sample, and a dreamcatcher.
